Refactoring Alloy Specifications

This paper proposes modeling laws for Alloy, a formal object-oriented modeling language. These laws are important not only to define the axiomatic semantics of Alloy but also to guide and formalize popular software development practices. In particular, these laws can be used to formaly refactor specifications. As an example, we formally refactor a specification for Java types.

Refactoring Object-Z specifications

This paper describes an approach to transferring techniques of refactorings to formal methods. We use syntactical rewriting rules to express refactorings on Object-Z specifications. In contrast to programming languages here refactorings can be formally proven to preserve the behaviour of the specification. We give an outline of such a proof of behaviour preservation.

Alloy as a Refactoring Checker?

Refactorings are systematic changes made to programs, models or specifications in order to improve their structure without changing the externally observable behaviour. We will examine how a constraint solver (the Alloy Analyzer) can be used to automatically check if refactorings, applied to a formal specification (written in Z), meet this requirement. Furthermore, we identify a class of refact...

A Proof Assistant for Alloy Specifications

Alloy is a specification language based on a relational firstorder logic with built-in operators for transitive closure, set cardinality, and integer arithmetic. The Alloy Analyzer checks Alloy specifications automatically with respect to bounded domains. Thus, while suitable for finding counterexamples, it cannot, in general, provide correctness proofs. This paper presents Kelloy, a tool for v...

A Set of Refactoring Rules for UML-B Specifications

UML-B is a graphical formal modelling notation which is based on UML and relies on Event-B and its verification tools. In this paper, we propose annealing and introduce subtyping rules as well-known refactoring rules which can improve and assist the derivation of object-oriented design from an abstract specification written in UML-B. We prove that the proposed annealing rules are behavior prese...
